Hundreds evacuated amid Dutch dike break fears (AP)
THE HAGUE, Netherlands ? Police and military personnel evacuated 800 people from four villages in the low-lying northern Netherlands on Friday amid fears of a dike break following days of drenching rains.
Authorities said that a section of the dike along a major canal could give way and submerge hundreds of hectares (acres) of land under up to 1.5 meters (5 feet) of water.
"The chance is small" the dike will break, said Yvonne van Mastrigt, chairman of the regional policy team that ordered the evacuation. "But in the interests of security of people and livestock I must take this decision."
Dozens of villagers and troops spent hours Thursday night piling sandbags on top of plastic sheets in an attempt to strengthen and waterproof the dike. The local water authority said the emergency repairs had stabilized the situation after water had begun seeping through the dike overnight.
In the early afternoon, authorities opened sluice gates to allow water to pour out to sea, a move that will lower water levels and ease pressure on the strained dikes.
The Defense Ministry also said an F-16 fighter jet equipped with a special camera used to detect roadside bombs in Afghanistan would fly over the region Friday to monitor the state of the dikes.
The evacuations 200 kilometers (125 miles) north of Amsterdam come after a combination of torrential rain and powerful northwesterly winds have soaked the country and prevented water being pumped into the sea.
A quarter of the Netherlands is below sea level and 55 percent of the country is considered susceptible to flooding, but the country has learned to live with the ever-present threat of high water, and devastating floods are rare.
Residents forced to leave their homes were advised to stay with friends or families but a makeshift evacuation center also was opened in nearby sports halls. A local agriculture organization appealed to farmers to come forward if they had extra space to house livestock being trucked out of the threatened area.
Water levels in rivers and canals across the Netherlands has been rising for days and authorities are on high alert for possible flooding and breaches in the thousands of kilometers (miles) of dikes that protect the country from inundation.
In the northern city of Groningen, staff at the Groninger Museum moved two exhibitions late Thursday from ground floor halls because of the rising level of a moat that surrounds the building. The museum was closed Friday.
Elsewhere in the north, which has been hardest hit by the recent storms, authorities deliberately flooded nature reserves to lower levels in drainage canals.
Some 85 farmers were advised Thursday to evacuate an area threatened by another dike breach but most refused and the dike held firm.
Even as the evacuation order was issued, the nationwide water authority Rijkswaterstaat issued a statement early Friday saying that all high water warnings it had issued the previous day had been withdrawn.
The national weather center predicted easing winds and scattered showers across the country ? a significant improvement from the high winds and heavy rain of recent days.
Major rivers the Maas and Rijn that run through the Netherlands remain high and authorities in cities such as Maastricht and Dordrecht were closely monitoring levels and distributing sandbags to residents who live close to their banks.
In Dordrecht, near the port city of Rotterdam, the cellars of several houses were flooded, but no major damage or injuries were reported.

Police: woman disguised to steal from neighbors
SALT LAKE CITY (AP) ? Police say a Salt Lake City woman wore a fake mustache to disguise herself as a man while stealing from her neighbors.
Salt Lake City police say the 31-year-old was charged with two counts of burglary and one count of theft Thursday.
The Salt Lake Tribune (http://bit.ly/wQ0s0u ) reports the woman's neighbors noticed thousands of dollars in cash went missing from their home on several occasions.
Court documents state the couple then set a trap with security cameras and planted cash as bait. The cameras showed a woman wearing a very large men's suit, a beanie hat and a fake mustache.
Authorities say the victims recognized the woman as their neighbor, to whom they had given a key to their house.
Police say they later found the disguise in the woman's home. The woman's name wasn't reported.

To help the economy, a Japanese?restaurateur?bought a record-setting $736,000 bluefin tuna today at?the first auction of the year at Tokyo's Tsukiji fish market. "Japan has been through a lot the last year due to the disaster," Kiyoshi Kimura, the?restaurateur and now proud owner of the tuna,?told the AP."Japan needs to hang in there. So I tried hard myself and ended up buying the most expensive one." Bidding crazy prices for bluefin tuna at the year's first auction isn't that uncommon in Japan--it's almost tradition. The Wall Street Journal pointed out that last year's then-record-setting fish sold for close to $400,000. But this year's fish is almost double the price and came with this nifty gesture: Kimura's sushi shop began selling the sushi today for just under $5 per piece--over $90 under its normal asking price.?
