Imagine Getting Your Head Chopped Off With the Oculus Rift

With the Oculus Rift virtual reality headset in developers' hands, the fresh ideas are flying faster than a head tumbling away from the executioner's axe. We've seen how much fun surviving can be in VR, now let's check out dying, Ned Stark-style.

Andr? Berlemont, Erkki Turmmal and Morten Brunbjerg created this guillotine simulator in two days, and it's easily the most frightening (and funny) mini-game I could imagine in a fantasy game. Just keep the karate chops off my neck, or it'll quickly escalate from decapitation simulator to real-world hand removal.

Israel airstrikes loom over US diplomacy on Syria

(AP) ? Secretary of State John Kerry is making his case to Russian President Vladimir Putin for Russia to take a tougher stance on Syria at a time when Israel's weekend air strikes against the beleaguered Mideast nation have added an unpredictable factor to the talks.

Kerry arrived Tuesday in Moscow for talks with the most powerful ally of Syrian President Bashar Assad's regime.

Officials said Kerry hopes to change Moscow's thinking on Syria with two new angles: American threats to arm the Syrian rebels and evidence of chemical weapon attacks by the Assad regime.

Over the weekend, Israeli warplanes targeted what Israel claimed were caches of Iranian missiles bound for Hezbollah, the Lebanon-based terror group. Such weapons would allow Hezbollah to strike Tel Aviv and as far as southern Israel from inside Lebanese territory.

Israel's willingness to hit Syrian targets it sees as threats to its own existence has complicated the Obama administration's internal debate over what to do about Syria.

Israel's actions put Damascus and Moscow on notice that the U.S. and its allies may not wait for an international green light to become more actively engaged in the Syrian conflict. The administration said last week it was rethinking its opposition to arming the Syrian rebels or taking other aggressive steps to turn the tide of the two-year-old civil war toward the rebels.

At the same time, Israeli involvement in the war carries risks. Instead of prodding Russia into calling for Assad's ouster, it could bring greater Arab sympathy for Assad and prompt deeper involvement from Iran and Hezbollah, actors committed as much to preserving Assad as to fighting the Jewish state.

Although Israel hasn't officially acknowledged it carried out the airstrikes, Syrian officials on Monday were blaming Israel, calling them a "declaration of war" that would cause the Jewish state to "suffer."

Russia, alongside China, has blocked U.S.-led efforts three times at the United Nations to pressure Assad into stepping down.

U.S. officials are hoping Syria's behavior could shift Russia's stance.

"We have consistently, in our conversations with the Russians and others, pointed clearly to Assad's behavior as proof that further support for the regime is not in the interest of the Syrian people or in the interest of the countries that have in the past supported Assad," White House spokesman Jay Carney said.

U.S. officials said the administration doesn't believe the weekend activity will force President Barack Obama's hand, noting that the main U.S. concern is the use of chemical weapons by Assad, while Israel's top concern is conventional weapons falling into the hands of its enemies.

The chemical weapons argument is now under surprising attack, with former war crimes prosecutor Carla Del Ponte saying over the weekend she and fellow members of a four-member U.N. human rights panel have indications the nerve agent sarin was used by Syrian rebel forces, not by government forces.

That theory was rejected by U.S. officials. The State Department said the administration continues to believe that Syria's large chemical weapons stockpiles remain securely in the regime's control.

The Obama administration opened the door to new military options in Syria after declaring last week it strongly believed the Assad regime used chemical weapons in two attacks in March. Two days after that announcement, Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel said arming the Syrian rebels was a policy consideration.

Until now, U.S. efforts to bolster the rebels' fighting skills and gather intelligence on the groups operating inside Syria have been limited to small training camps in Jordan, according to two U.S. officials who weren't authorized to speak about secret activities and demanded anonymity.

There are several options for escalation, ranging from arming the rebels to targeted airstrikes and no-fly zones. However, arming the rebels is the most likely escalation, officials said.

While the Israeli actions have made Kerry's Russia efforts more unpredictable, some in Congress tried to be optimistic.

Maryland Rep. Dutch Ruppersberger, the top Democrat on the House Intelligence Committee, said he hopes Kerry can persuade Russia to use its influence to convince the besieged Syrian leader that he should step down.

"Hopefully the cooperation on the (Boston) Marathon bombing will open the door there," Ruppersberger said.

After visiting Moscow for the first time since he became secretary of state, Kerry will travel to Rome for talks with members of the new Italian government, as well as meetings with Israeli Justice Minister Tzipi Livni and Jordanian Foreign Minister Nasser Judeh to discuss Middle East peace prospects.

European stocks subdued as US jobs cheer fades

(AP) ? European stocks edged lower on Monday as the momentum from an unexpectedly strong U.S. jobs report last week faded.

While Asian stocks enjoyed a bound and Wall Street was set for a higher opening, European stocks showed little resilience and pulled back from highs set on Friday, when the U.S. Labor Department said employers added 165,000 workers in April. The figure was above forecast and hiring in February and March was also stronger than previously estimated. The unemployment rate fell to 7.5 percent, the lowest level in four years.

After enjoying gains last week, investors in Europe focused once again on the huge economic problems facing the 17-country eurozone. Unemployment has been hitting a series of record highs and governments don't have the money to spend on new growth programs.

By midday in Europe, Germany's DAX was 0.1 percent lower at 8,116.10 after hitting a record high on Friday. France's CAC-40 was down 0.3 percent at 3,902.95. London trading was closed for a bank holiday.

Wall Street appeared headed for more gains, with Dow futures rising 0.2 percent to 14,924. The broader S&P 500 futures rose almost 0.1 percent to 1,609.

Friday's job report counterbalanced weeks of mixed signals about manufacturing and corporate earnings and renewed hopes of a recovery in the world's largest economy.

"Markets just came back to life, helped by that strong reading from U.S. nonfarm payrolls. That number completely obliterated expectations," said Stan Shamu, market strategist at IG in Melbourne.

In Asia, Malaysia's KLSE Composite surged 3.4 percent to 1,752.02 after the country's governing coalition won national elections, albeit with a weakened majority, to extend its unbroken, 56-year rule.

Hong Kong's Hang Seng rose 1 percent to 22,915.09. Australia's S&P/ASX advanced 0.5 percent to 5,156.20. Benchmarks in Singapore, Taiwan and Indonesia also rose, while the Philippines fell. South Korea's Kospi lost 0.2 percent to 1,962.25. Japan's stock market was closed for a public holiday.

Benchmark oil for June delivery was up 65 cents to $96.26 per barrel in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange. The contract rose $1.62 to close at $95.61 a barrel on the Nymex on Friday.

In currencies, the euro fell to $1.3103 from $1.3110 late Friday in New York. The dollar rose to 99.22 yen from 99.04 yen.

Report: The Next Xbox Will Let You Play Games Offline

Here's a promising development in the ever-confusing drama surrounding Microsoft's next gaming console: a new report suggests that you will indeed be able to play Durango games offline.

Today, news site Ars Technica quotes the turnabout in what they say is an e-mail sent by Microsoft officials to all internal Xbox employees. The e-mail states that the next Xbox will let people play games without connecting to the web, despite the rumors that have been swirling over the past few months that Microsoft's new console will follow in the footsteps of games like SimCity and Diablo III, requiring an Internet connection to function.

"Durango is designed to deliver the future of entertainment while engineered to be tolerant of today's Internet," the memo reportedly says. "There are a number of scenarios that our users expect to work without an Internet connection, and those should 'just work' regardless of their current connection status. Those include, but are not limited to: playing a Blu-ray disc, watching live TV, and yes playing a single player game."

This language?and the memo's existence in the first place?seems to suggest either severe confusion or a policy shift at Redmond. For quite some time now, outlets like Edge, IGN, and Kotaku have been reporting rumblings that the next Xbox will require an Internet connection to function, and we've heard from multiple people who have developed or are developing games for the console, some of whom have confirmed the news, and others who haven't heard anything about it.

What's also noteworthy is what the purported memo doesn't say: you may not need an Internet connection to play games, but what about when you need one to install them? (Internal Durango documents we read through earlier this year indicated that every Durango game, even those that are bought on a disc, need to be installed and only ever run off the machine's hard drive, not off the disc.)

This memo comes on the heels of reported rumblings of unrest and dissent at Microsoft over the past few weeks and months. Multiple Kotaku sources have suggested that the Xbox makers are behind where they need to be, and one source told us recently that there are multiple factions at Microsoft, some of whom believe that the system should require an Internet connection to play games, and some of whom don't. We've also heard stories of studios that have gotten their Durango development kits late, or not at all.

According to one source in a position to know, the recent drama involving former Microsoft creative director Adam Orth?whose controversial defense of "always on" triggered widespread Internet outrage?energized parties at Microsoft who have always been against the idea of an always-online console. This may have triggered a shift in policy at Microsoft. We reached out to the Xbox makers for comment, and we'll update should we hear back from them.

UPDATE: "We?re excited to share more about the new generation of games, TV and entertainment on May 21, but have nothing further to share at this time," says Microsoft in an e-mail.

On May 21, Microsoft will reveal the next Xbox. We haven't seen today's memo, but if anyone can vouch for its authenticity, let us know.

Samsung Galaxy S4 commercial: Some smartphones are smarter than others

Galaxy S4

Samsung shows off the Galaxy S4's features, pokes more fun at the iPhone in their latest ad

Samsung has a new commercial for the Galaxy S4 out there, and like we saw last year with the Galaxy S3, they aren't afraid to take the fight to Apple about features. In the latest Graduation Pool Party ad, Samsung shows us hands-free features like gestures to answer a call and hovering to read a text, the admittedly awesome camera software and it's "Drama Mode" where a series of images are transmogrified into one really cool picture showing all the action, S-Beam, and the IR blaster capabilities. And at every turn, they are quick to show us that the iPhone can't do any of them.

Samsung really wants Apple's spot in the smartphone food chain. The Galaxy S4 is poised to be the device that can get them there, taking the brand to the level where it's synonymous with the smart phone. For the folks who care about features great and small, it's clearly the current best-in-class device. Advertising can help sell products, but you have to start with a great piece of equipment to begin with, and Samsung has built a phone that people will like and want to buy -- and the ads will let the people know it's available. Hit the break where we've embedded the latest video.

93% No

All Critics (100) | Top Critics (31) | Fresh (93) | Rotten (7)

"No" is a picture that perches precariously on the cusp of a paradox.

A cunning and richly enjoyable combination of high-stakes drama and media satire from Chilean director Pablo Larrain.

A mesmerizing, realistic and often hilarious look at the politics of power and the power of ideas ...

A political drama, a personal drama, a sharp-eyed study of how the media manipulate us from all sides, No reels and ricochets with emotional force.

It's a funny look at the way the media warp public opinion, and a curiously hopeful one.

On every level, "No" leaves one with bittersweet feelings about democracy, love and the cost of compromise.

NO is an important film - especially for people too young or too far removed from Pinochet's "Dirty War" to remember how horrifying the situation was in Argentina during the '70s and '80s. Bernal's screen presence goes a long way in making the movie work

A bitingly funny, fascinating and moving portrait of Pinochet's fall that's smartly shot and superbly performed.

"NO" is an inspirational political drama in which the people are roused by the visual to overcome the vicious.

... features a fine performance by Gael Garc?a Bernal as young ad exec Ren? Saavedra, who didn't, at first, quite realise what he was in for when he decided to assist in the bringing down of military dictator Augusto Pinochet.

No is a great historical document as to how one very important revolution started with a commercial.

The understated performance by Bernal was inspiring, as was the pic.

It's not easy material but it's truly fascinating, and expertly done.

An extremely perceptive and intriguing examination of the effect that media hype and spin have on the political process.

...a bitter and knowing meditation on media manipulation and political subversion.

Larrain deftly mixes social satire and historical drama.

All historical and little drama.

Larrain does a fine job of making No look and sound authentic to its time period, although the VHS-quality photography, all washed-out with colors bleeding together as camcorders did in the '80s, is an occasional irritant.

Silliness is on the side of the angels in a brilliant and highly entertaining film that's part political thriller, part media satire.

It's clear that the language of advertising has become universal, and that political commodities can be sold like soap. But toppling a dictatorship? Now there's a story.

A reflection of a moment in time, made in the image of that moment.

Bernal deftly explores the layers of the character's complexity, including his political apathy.

"No" is filmmaking of the first order.

Old technology plus the packaging of a revolution add up to a Yes

Freshens up a decades-old story with vibrant humor and a good sense of storytelling.

Sunday afternoons talking about Enlightened Society
Post a Comment May 3, 2013 ? 4:32 pm | Permalink |

It all comes down to arranging radishes, really. There have now been five gatherings in our center parlor, five unstructured Sunday afternoons, discussing Enlightened Society. As the open invitation says ?What is it? Is it possible? Who cares?? Each time we meet there are some of the same people, and some different people, sometimes five people, sometimes 10. The discussion evolves freely, from personal stories to workplace and social situations. Some of us are Shambhalians, some have received the lung ? the Enlightened Society Treatise ? some are going to, some not.

And the radishes? A local farmer, just getting into his hectic Spring season, told us about a helper who insisted on arranging radishes to his own ideas instead of following instructions. The helper?s been instructed maybe seven times on how the farmer wants these done. So now what? Like the song ?50 Ways to Leave Your Lover? there are probably 50 ways to deal with the radish situation. Each will have some result and some residual emotional fallout over time for both farmer and helper! Society in a microcosm.

Everyone who comes either already knows how to listen, or soon picks up that it?s an important part of the gathering. Like songbirds, we each have our own refrain, buried in the general discussion. When you listen you hear again and again from one person the underlying song of how to belong, from another, how to be patient. From another how to have wisdom, another how to be brave. It feels like we are working on a jigsaw puzzle, helping each other put in the pieces. The picture we?re making is of Enlightened Society. And it looks a lot like radishes.

Detective details Jackson doctor's massive debts

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? A police detective testified Wednesday about the depths of debt that Michael Jackson's doctor faced while giving the singer treatments of the powerful anesthetic that killed the pop superstar.

Los Angeles police Detective Orlando Martinez said in a case filed by Jackson's mother against concert giant AEG Live that Conrad Murray faced student loans, home loans, child support obligations and credit card payments that were in arrears in 2009. Plaintiff's attorney Brian Panish said the debts totaled nearly $1 million.

Martinez has said the debts may have led Murray to act inappropriately in his care of Jackson in order to ensure he received $150,000 a month payments from AEG Live to serve as the singer's tour doctor.

"He may break the rules, bend the rules, do whatever he needed to do to get paid," Martinez said Tuesday. "It might solve his money problems."

Murray's finances were not a factor in the criminal case that ended with his 2011 conviction for administering a fatal dose of propofol to Jackson.

The former cardiologist is not a party to Katherine Jackson's negligent hiring case against the concert promoter, but he is a key figure. The Jackson family matriarch contends AEG did not properly investigate Murray before allowing him to serve as Jackson's tour physician for the ill-fated "This Is It" shows planned for 2009.

Martinez testified he found most of the debts against Murray in public records.

Martinez's testimony Wednesday was bogged down by continuous objections from AEG attorneys and the detective spent most of an hour-long session authenticating public records. He testified briefly about Murray's phone records before court recessed for the day so that an alternate juror could attend a funeral.

AEG denies it hired Murray, and its attorney has noted that Jackson and his children had been treated by the doctor before the shows were planned.

Martinez is the second witness called in the case, which in its early stages will focus on Jackson's death. Potential witnesses later in the trial include stars such as Diana Ross, Quincy Jones and Spike Lee. Jackson's mother, several siblings and his two oldest children, Prince and Paris, are also listed as potential witnesses.

Millions and possibly billions of dollars are at stake in the trial, which may last 90 court days.

AEG attorneys said they intend to call Murray as a witness. He remains in a Los Angeles jail and is appealing his conviction.

Reese Witherspoon Talks Arrest (Video)

On Good Morning America today Reese Witherspoon opened up about being arrested for disorderly conduct for the first time. If you missed the interview, never fear you can see it in the below video. Witherspoon sat down with GMA’s George Stephanopoulos today to chat about her new movie Mud, also starring hunky Matthew Mcconaughey. However before she got the chance to talk about her film, she had to come clean about what really went down that night in Atlanta. She reiterated what the statement she already released said, saying she had one to many, acted in poor judgment, etc. The Oscar winner came across very genuine and sincere, apologizing for what she called very embarrassing actions. George didn’t hold back either asking her questions like “Why did you not take a car service or cab” and “How do you explain this to your kids”. For her part Reese answered the questions without hesitation. I saw the interview and I have to say she handled it beautifully. Granted she could have an excellent publicist who coached her but she seemed so sincere in what she was saying. She owned up to what she did and talked about how she became panicked [...]
