10 Lumps of Sugar Please!

Ten (10) lumps of sugar with my coffee, is what you are actually asking for when you order anyone of the more popular coffee house drinks. There was a time when you ordered coffee you would be asked ?one lump or two?? One lump of sugar or sugar cube is a teaspoon; so, one lump or two was about one to two teaspoons of sugar and maybe a splash of cream. Most coffee house concoctions begin at 10 grams of sugar and can have as many as 60 grams of sugar in one coffee drink. While these drinks are fun and flavorful, even the smallest Frappuccino drink packs over 10 lumps of sugar or 10 teaspoons in one (1) 12 oz. serving. That?s more sugar than a Snicker?s candy bar! If you ate 1 to 3 candy bars a day, you would expect to gain weight and become unhealthy. The truth is that most of these seemingly innocent coffee drinks are basically liquefied caffeinated candy. The high ingestion of sugar is a signal to your body to move into fat storage mode. Here is what happens in your body.

Ingesting high amounts of sugar rapidly raises your blood glucose levels quickly causing the pancreas to go into overdrive and secrete insulin in an attempt to lower blood sugar. The insulin drives the glucose into your cells to be used as energy but when extra energy is not needed it is stored as fat! When in overdrive, the body will often produce too much insulin. Extra insulin in your bloodstream tricks your brain into thinking you need more glucose, which triggers food cravings for more sweet foods. This is the time you opt for the chocolate muffin after your morning Frappuccino. The cycle continues when your blood sugar drops and gets too low. Your body?s response is to release a stress hormone like adrenaline and cortisol in an attempt to get your blood sugar level back up to acceptable levels. Wonder why you experience weight gain around your belly? That?s due to your body?s over production of cortisol which results in mid-section weight gain!

If you are trying to lose weight, substituting or using coffee drinks to replace meals, is not your answer. SEO isn?t too hard. Really, it?s about a month?s worth of learning, then years and years of trial-and-error testing.

Course, it doesn?t take years to see some success. Like any new skill, you?ll see beneficial results relatively quickly. But it does take years to figure out the ins and outs of the search engines. How updates affect SEO, how to become resistant to these updates, how to create your own strategies, etc.

But once you get competent with SEO, once you?ve proven to yourself you can rank your own websites, you?ll probably start feeling an urge to do SEO for private clients. We can?t blame you ? the SEO industry is lucrative. If done correctly, you can build a six-figure business relatively easily.

To do that, though, you?re going to have to be different. You?re going to have to stand out from the other SEO companies (and there are thousands of them).

The internet marketing space is, frankly, disgusting. As I work with small business owners, I?ve been shocked at the antics pulled by my fellow internet marketers. It?s all a focus on the short-term. All about getting money in your bank account as quick as possible. And that?s it.

I talked to one company who hired an SEO guy at $1,400 a month. This company knew nothing about SEO, and the contractor took full advantage of this. He didn?t even install an analytics program for them! He worked for eight months and they had no clue if what he was doing was working.

Then once they figured out he wasn?t doing anything, they let him go (they originally signed a six month contract, but kept him on for eight months).

?

When they let him go, he ripped all of the on-page work he?d done off of the page, severely damaging the functionality. They weren?t sure, but they told me they thought he removed the links he?d built as well.

?

This is not an internet marketing horror story ? it happens all the time! These internet marketers take full advantage of the fact that internet marketing is complicated. If the client doesn?t understand it, they figure they can milk them for a few extra bucks!

This is not how to make money. This is how to make short-term gains and sacrificing long-term potential.

If he?d done a good job, if he was 100% upfront and delivered on what he claimed, he would?ve been a permanent asset. Because SEO increases revenue. If he was affecting small businesses on the bottom line, making them more money, they would want to continue employing him!

Go the Extra Mile

Want to know what sucks about selling internet marketing services? Getting your first clients.?

You haven?t proven yourself, and it?s a HUGE uphill battle (thanks largely to the unethical internet marketers like mentioned above).

So many companies have been burned by dishonest marketers. Not only are you cold calling them, but you also have to work against the negative reputation of the last marketer they hired.?

The process is a grind. But it?s not that bad ? eventually, you?ll get a chance to prove yourself. When you get that chance, NAIL IT. Go above and beyond what they ever expected.?

This might sound difficult, but believe me, it?s not. Realize that most marketers don?t even do what they claim they?ll do. So by simply delivering on what you promise, you put yourself above the vast majority of other marketers!?

It?s the little things that count. Explain everything you?re doing in detail. Give them ways to check your work, to make sure you?re doing what you?ve promised you will do. If they need a quick fix, do it for free.

Why?

Because they will shout your name from the rooftops. It truly is this simple. If you do business correctly, the only clients you need to cold call for will be your very first clients. From then on, you?ll thrive on word of mouth advertising. You?ll find small business owners are very connected. And they all have the same problem ? they can?t find internet marketers with integrity!

So when they find one (you), they will tell everyone they know about you. And then with those new clients, they?ll tell everyone they know about you. Soon, you?ll have more clients than you know what to do with.

I'm a fan of using mobile apps for health and fitness because of the nature of the smartphone, the fact that it's never out of reach, eliminating many excuses to not diligently keep an eye on your own well being. Whether you're counting calories or tracking changes in your blood pressure, having the tools and resources you need at your fingertips is invaluable. A new iPhone app, called GAIN Fitness (free to download; exercise packs from $2.99), powers your workouts with portability, and is an Editors' Choice among health and fitness apps. GAIN Fitness is like a workout buddy, coaching you through an entire exercise regimen. Excellent options in the app let it remind you to work out and even customize the exercises you can do while on the go, at home, or at the gym.?

If time or circumstances prevent you from completing a thorough workout, the app offers a shorter and lighter "plan B" routine, on the premise that some exercise is better than no exercise. Workouts can take as little as five minutes or up to 90 minutes.

Because GAIN Fitness guides you through a workout, it's unlike some other popular fitness apps, such as MapMyRun or MapMyRide+ because it tells you what to do rather than measures what you are doing. Even the sophisticated Digifit iCardio Multi-Sport Heart Rate Monitor Training app, which connects with a heart rate strap to measure your body's response to activity, relies on you picking the activity. Some of these other apps have coaching features, which tell you when to run faster or slower, for example, but they aren't focused on circuit training, yoga, or other mixed exercise activities, the way GAIN is. I recently saw a preview of an as-yet unreleased app called Vitness Rx, which is similar to GAIN in its training approach, but adds heart rate data to further guide the intensity of your workout, based on your daily stress level, fatigue, and overall heart health.

GAIN Fitness comes preinstalled with some exercises that cover the entire body, but more are available as in-app purchases from $2.99. These add-ons can get expensive, as there are many that focus on specific areas of the body or are branded with a fitness personality, for example, Pattie Stafford's Butterfly Yoga ($6.99) and Nate Miyaki's The Road Warrior ($5.99). The included exercises with the free app, however, are comprehensive and should keep new users busy and not at all bored for several weeks at least.

During setup, you can select goals, such as how many days per week you want to work out, and whether you're exercising for health, fat loss, or muscle gain. You devise a series of workouts based on your needs, so you can have a 10-minute workout for when you're on the go, a 35-minute routine for when you're home, and a 60-minute session for the gym.

As you customize your various routines, the app provides a wealth of options, such as selection boxes where you can indicate what equipment you have on hand, such as kettle bells, pull-up bar, a or just a sturdy table and a door frame. You can also customize which parts of the body you want to work out, include or exclude warm-ups and cool downs, and set alarms and alerts to remind you to do your routines on the days you specify.

When you're ready to work out, the app shows you an overview of all the exercises you'll complete, in order. Start the workout, and the app will then walk you through each activity, showing proper form, outlining how many sets and reps you should complete, and showing a countdown clock that times the active session as well as rests between activities and reps. The app has ample audio cues and audible explanations, so you don't have to stare at the screen while you workout. I also liked that GAIN gives you the option to skip any exercise in your routine, which is important if you feel strained or have an injury that prevents you from stressing certain parts of the body. At the end of the routine, GAIN will ask if you want to now complete any exercises you skipped, in case you passed them over just because you were tired at the time. All these options really help keep the routines highly personalized.

GAIN Fitness for iPhone packs a wealth of features and options into a great app that can help you workout every day, if that's your aim, or when you have a few free minutes here and there. The included exercises cover the entire body and are enough to keep new users busy and satisfied for a while, but paid add-ons are available, too.

Republican convention is in full-throated roar

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) ? With the Republican National Convention at last in full-throated roar, nominee Mitt Romney and his team reached out Wednesday to connect with critical voting groups ? veterans, Hispanics and women ? while gleefully mocking the man he is out to defeat in November.

Romney himself was ducking out of his own convention in Tampa to address the American Legion Convention in Indianapolis. Sen. Marco Rubio, R-Fla., a top Hispanic voice in the GOP, made the round of morning talk shows to defend the GOP nominee's policies. And Ann Romney and Janna Ryan, the wife of Romney's running mate, teamed up to headline a "Women for Romney" fundraiser.

At the women's event, Mrs. Romney offered her husband as "the one person who is going to turn this country around," and promised that her husband would keep in mind the needs of women and families, if elected. Later, she attended a Latino Coalition lunch, where son Craig addressed guests in Spanish, and described his father as "a man you can trust."

Mrs. Romney told the Latino crowd that Democrats try to make it look like Republicans "don't care about this community. That's not true. We very much care about this community."

Latinos, she said, "are mistaken if they think they are going to be better off" if President Barack Obama wins re-election, she said.

The politics played out as Hurricane Isaac blew ashore on the Gulf Coast, casting uncertainty into a convention that scrubbed the first day of events out of fear it would swipe Tampa. Officials in Louisiana said that as of midday Wednesday, New Orleans' flood protection system was holding up as Isaac moved through the area.

Romney was considering whether to visit the Gulf Coast after Isaac moves through, but no decision had been made.

The main draw for Wednesday night's convention session is vice presidential candidate Paul Ryan, the 42-year-old Wisconsin congressman and author of a tough budget that remakes the way the government spends money.

"I think people are going to like what they see because we are offering specific, bold solutions to get people back to work, to get this country back on the right track," Ryan said in a taped interview with WTMJ-TV in Milwaukee. He acknowledged having a stricter anti-abortion stance than Romney, but said he's comfortable with the GOP nominee's position "because it's a vast improvement on the status quo."

Rubio, interviewed on "CBS This Morning," held out Ryan as a serious policy thinker who's "going to have a bunch of new fans across this country" after he speaks.

Obama's re-election campaign released an online video casting Ryan, who is hugely popular with conservatives, as a politician from a "bygone era" whose budget proposals threaten Medicare and would gut funding for Planned Parenthood.

A poll by the Pew Research Center and The Washington Post found Americans deeply divided about Ryan, whom they described as conservative, intelligent, fake, phony.

Romney's nomination now official, he was free at last to start dipping into his general-election pot of campaign cash.

"We're excited that now he's going to be able to spend money, both in English and in Spanish, to explain to people how his policies will help grow the economy, help small business, help people have the confidence to invest in the future," Rubio said."

To ensure the cash keeps rolling in, Ann Romney emailed supporters a fundraising appeal that echoed her Tuesday night speech to the convention.

"This man will not fail," she promised in the plea.

Obama, for his part, was courting another key voting group ? young voters ? with a second day of campaigning in college towns. He had hoped to speak on the University of Virginia campus, but the school rejected that idea, saying it would disrupt classes on the second day of the semester. He'll speak in an off-campus pavilion instead.

The latest economic news suggested weak growth in the second half of the year, fodder for Republicans who blame Obama for the sluggish recovery. The U.S. economy grew at a tepid 1.7 percent annual rate in the April-June quarter, the government reported Wednesday, a bit better than expected due to slightly stronger consumer spending and greater exports.

The GOP's outreach effort went into full gear after Ann Romney offered convention delegates ? and a national TV audience ? a soft-sided portrayal of the Republican candidate in her convention address. Her appearance was paired with a parade of gleeful Obama-bashers as the GOP seized its moment after days of worry about the hurricane.

Beyond Ryan, Wednesday's lineup includes 2008 Republican presidential candidate John McCain and former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice. Romney speaks Thursday night to bring down the curtain-closing balloons. Obama's Democratic National Convention follows next week in Charlotte, N.C.

Rice, warming up for her speech, said the voice of the United States in world affairs "has been muted" under this president, creating a chaotic and dangerous security environment. She spoke on "CBS This Morning."

Opinion polls, however, show Obama getting high marks on national security after ending the war in Iraq, drawing down the conflict in Afghanistan and ordering the killing of terrorist leader Osama bin Laden.

Romney made his debut at the convention two days before his own speech, rousing the crowd into cheers as he took the stage briefly to share a kiss with his wife after she spoke. Ann Romney's prime-time speech was in large measure an outreach to female voters as she declared her husband "will not let us down" if elected president.

Her tone was intimate as she spoke about the struggles of working families: "If you listen carefully, you'll hear the women sighing a little bit more than the men. It's how it is, isn't it? It's the moms who always have to work a little harder, to make everything right."

Obama's allies did their best to counter Romney and the Republicans.

First lady Michelle Obama traveled to New York to promote her healthy-living initiatives while visiting "The Dr. Oz Show" and Rachael Ray's talk show. The programs will air next month, closer to the election.

Mrs. Obama also was making a guest appearance on Wednesday's "Late Show with David Letterman."

Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, dismissing GOP attempts to woo Hispanic voters, said: "You can't just trot out a brown face or a Spanish surname and expect people are going to vote for your party or your candidate." He added, "This is a party with a platform that calls for the self-deportation of 11 million people."

Hispanics strongly favor Obama, according to public polls, and Romney and his party have been seeking to win a bigger share of their votes by emphasizing proposals to fix the economy rather than ease their positions on immigration.

Polls find the economy is overwhelmingly the dominant issue in the race and voters narrowly favor Romney to handle it. In an AP-GfK poll taken Aug. 16-20, some 48 percent of registered voters said they trust Romney more on economic issues, to 44 percent for Obama. However, a Washington Post-ABC News in the days immediately before the convention found that 61 percent of registered voters said Obama was more likable, while 27 percent said Romney.

Krauthammer warns GOP may have to change convention tone with hurricane threat

During the Fox News Channel?s?Sunday night coverage of the Republican National Convention in Tampa, Washington Post?columnist Charles Krauthammer explained to viewers why now-Tropical Storm Isaac may force Republicans to adjust their messaging strategies during the convention.

Krauthammer told host Bret Baier that the first day?s cancellation takes a few pages out of the Republicans? attack-President-Obama playbook.

?There are two problems,? Krauthammer said. ?Number one: The cancellation of day one and some of day two is difficult for Republicans because that is the day for red meat. You want to be really negative, hit really hard, talk about the path at the beginning and then you end the convention with Ryan and Romney talking about the future, talking about hope and all that. You?re losing the opportunity to really hit the other guys hard.?

If the storm is serious, Krauthammer added, it could mean the entire convention sees a shift in tone.

?The other part is when you get to Tuesday and Wednesday, if there is a catastrophe somewhere on the southern coast on the Gulf of Mexico, then what?s the tone of the convention? It has to change completely.

?It has to be kind of solemn,? he concluded. ?It has to be more we are in this together, more inspirational.So you have to shift the emphasis of the speeches and the introduction of Romney. That?s the whole point, was introducing Romney. But now you have to think in larger terms and a lot softer terms.?

Who is Yvonne Grace?

I am trained in Theatre Design (got a BA Hons degree in it anyway!) and am an ex-actress, having worked for 5 years in Theatre In Education and Community Theatre Companys. I realised that it was the written word, not the spoken, that interested and excited me and so I went into script development and reading lots of scripts for lots of organisations including, Channel Four, Radio Four, The Young Vic, The Bush Theatre, and most new writing venues in London in the late 80?s early 90?s. I set up The Deptford Wives (since I was then living in Deptford ? the title suggested itself!) ? a script development company and ran successful script in hand performances out of the Birds Nest Theatre Pub in Deptford. I went into television via a script editing job on Eastenders and worked my way along the script editing route and into drama producing. I have produced children?s drama for CITV and Holby City for the BBC and also executive produced Crossroads for ITV as well as developing lots of long running series ideas for both markets with a wide variety of writers. I set up Script Advice in 2007 to help writers write better scripts, primarily for the tv market. I also design and run short courses for organisations such as C4, The National Film and TV school, and The Script Factory and am speaking at the London Screenwriters Festival in October and at their Breakfast Club in September. In 2006 I left the city, moved to the country, got married and had a little boy in space of a year. His name is Michael, he is 4 and a half and starts school in September. I plan then to re-start my own writing career!

Had you always been interested in scriptwriting?

I have always been interested in how writers write and why they do. I have always been fascinated by the written word and by stories. I believe storytelling is in my blood and the need to express stories to as many people as possible is a very real thing in me. I love to read and to immerse myself in a book or a film or a radio play. I enjoy all genres of storytelling and found shaping a writer?s ideas for a large audience (which is ultimately the work I have done on television) a very exciting and rewarding job to do.

What were the most difficult challenges you?ve had to overcome?

I believe the most difficult challenge for me when I was starting out was the fact that I did not know anyone in the television world or anyone who had even done the job or heard of the job that I had managed to land for myself on Eastenders. I wasn?t educated at Oxford or Cambridge and at the time I was trying to get into telly, most drama jobs seemed to have an Oxbridge graduate in them. So I had to be tenacious, confident, polite, thick-skinned and also really really know my stuff. I thankfully managed to achieve some, if not all, of the requirements necessary and after 2 years of knocking on doors I got the intro I needed by the insightful invitation to join Eastenders from Helen Greaves.

What has been your major highlight to date and tell us more about some of the projects you?ve been involved with?

A major highlight for me was winning the LWT Comedy Award for Best Children?s Comedy for the Children?s pilot I produced ?My Dad?s A Boring Nerd? written by Joe Turner. I also have huge affection for Crossroads, and particularly the last metamorphosis of the show, as I Executive Produced the show, changed it?s image and cast Jane Asher as the Uber Bitch Angel Sampson. I am very proud of the ratings we achieved (1.5 million a day across the week) and enjoyed working with such a talented team of creatives both in front and behind the camera. I am also very proud of the success I made of Holby City series 2. I turned the show around from being a critical, but not ratings success, to being both popular with the critics and popular with audiences. My series gained a top viewing figure of 9.6 million and I believe these figures ensured Holby?s continued success. Again, the success of this show is a team effort and it is working with writers and actors and production crews that both know their stuff and enjoy doing their stuff that really makes working in television enjoyable and rewarding.

What advice would you give to new unpublished scriptwriters?

Write yourself a very very good calling card script first and foremost. Then target the people you want to read your work. Be selective and be respectful at all times. Be tenacious and try at all times to show confidence in your work and in yourself (even if you dont always feel like that!) When someone gives you a chance, no matter how small it may seem at the time, or that it might not be just exactly what you want ? take it and do your best always with the opportunities you are given and those you create for yourself.

Script Advice is a website that I run that offers script reading, script editing, script development and treatment reading services for any writer interested in developing their skill base and writing craft. I know about television, so that is my main area of expertise that I like to pass on to my clients, but I also read plays, novels and radio plays. I know what it is like to write in a vacuum and feel isolated from other writers ? so I also, via Script Advice, offer writers a place to go to ask questions, to find support and advice. I write 2 blogs and distribute a newsletter 4 times a year via my Facebook group Script Advice Writers Room and by my mail list. If writers contact me on my email address from my website I also try and help and will get back to you as soon as I can. I also run workshops and short courses on storylining, script editing and treatment writing. I basically love working with people and although I see myself as a leader, not a team player, I thrive on the buzz we all get from sharing our experiences and learning from each other ? my workshops celebrate the difference in all our writer voices and I try and pass on my experience in writing and shaping drama for the small screen to as many people as I can.

Brit Writers is a great organisation. I love the support that you offer both young people and fully grown ups! Your work in schools regarding literacy and encouraging joy in reading and writing is very important work and I commend you for this.

What would you like to say to anyone reading this right now?

I would like to say to anyone reading this; have faith in your own ability and stretch yourself and your writing, if possible, on a daily basis. Self belief and looking challenge in the face is something all writers need to be able to master and do. Writing is like psychotherapy in some ways, know yourself and you will make a better writer ? so always look to yourself to find the truth in what you write. Listen to those that have experience in the craft and the industry, take all advice with grace and as much as possible, be realistic about what you can achieve and about your own skill. Do not worry about your failings, try and improve and go forward each day.

Syria 'arrests anti-regime actor'

Syrian security agents have arrested a television actor who opposes the Damascus regime, activists said on Saturday, a day after a prominent independent filmmaker disappeared.

Mohammed Omar Oso and members of his family were seized from their home in the upscale western Damascus district of Mazzeh, according to militant groups, including the Rally of Artists in Syria, which posted the information on Facebook.

The reports about Oso, who has starred in several popular television soap operas, could not be independently confirmed.

But activists have reported a number of arrests and attacks against prominent media and cultural figures since the uprising against President Bashar al-Assad's autocratic regime began in March last year.

On Friday, the Local Coordination Committees said that prominent independent film producer Orwa Nyrabia had gone missing after going to Damascus airport to catch a flight to Cairo, and was feared to have been arrested.

Media and the arts in Syria are heavily controlled by the government in Syria.

Nyrabia, who co-founded his own production company Proaction Film and a documentary festival in Syria known as DOX BOX, has often served on panels at film festivals in Europe and the Middle East.

Permira to buy Japan sushi restaurant chain for about $1bln

HONG KONG/TOKYO Aug 24 (Reuters) - European private equity f irm Permira said on Friday it has agreed to buy Japan's largest sushi restaurant chain, Akindo Sushiro Co Ltd, for around $1 billion including debt, in what is set to be the nation's second-biggest buyout deal this year.

Permira, which struck the deal with Japanese buyout fund Unison Capital to buy Akindo, is already working on expansion plans that include taking the chain into China, Permira's co-head of Asia, Alex Emery, told Reuters.

"The company is now in a position to double or triple the number of stores in the next decade," said Emery. "They have three stores in Korea, and they're actively thinking of China an d other overseas markets."

Akindo Sushiro is the second large restaurant chain buyout for a global private equity firm in Japan in the last 12 months, after Bain Capital acquired Skylark for $2.1 billion last year.

Akindo had annual sales of around 100 billion yen in 2011, and has been growing at around 10 percent a year, said Emery. Akindo Sushiro's family friendly restaurants buck the formal style of Japan's traditional sushi restaurants, Emery said, and its average price per meal of around 1,000 yen is about half the cost of a meal at a mid-range Japanese sushi restaurant.
