Obama takes bus tour to connect with average Americans

President Obama will take a break from fancy fundraisers for a two-day bus tour through swing states to try to reach out to average voters.

President Barack?Obama?is ramping up a fresh phase of his re-election bid with a bus tour next week, focusing more on direct engagement with voters and less on ritzy fundraisers.

Obama's?two-day road trip through Pennsylvania and Ohio, two key battleground?states?in the November election, kicks off July 5, a campaign official said. It will be the president's first bus tour of the 2012 campaign.

The bus trip also will coincide with the release of the monthly nationwide jobs report, a key economic indicator that could directly affect the president's re-election prospects. The most recent report, for May, showed a slight uptick in the unemployment rate, raising fears among?Obamaaides of an election-year economic slowdown.

While?Obama?has been running for re-election for months, his efforts thus far have focused largely on hauling in cash from supporters in dozens of fundraising events across the country as his campaign seeks to compete with energized Republican donors. He spent the early part of this week on a two-day, four-state fundraising blitz that brought in more than $5 million.

The president will still headline campaign fundraisers through the fall, but the official said?Obama's?schedule would start to include more of a mix of campaign rallies and other events focused on speaking directly to a wide swath of voters in the?states?Obama?needs most in order to hold the White House.

Further underscoring his strategy shift was his campaign's announcement this week that Jennifer Psaki, a former senior White House aide, was joining the president's re-election team as traveling press secretary.

Ohio and Pennsylvania, with 38 electoral votes between them, are crucial to the president's re-election bid.?Obama?won both?states?in 2008, but Republican rival Mitt Romney is expected to make a strong play for each.

Just over four months from Election Day,?Obama?aides consider Ohio a toss-up but believe Pennsylvania is leaning in the president's favor. Romney took a bus tour of his own through Ohio and Pennsylvania earlier this month.

A new poll by Quinnipiac University shows?Obama?holding a 9-percentage-point lead over Romney in Ohio, and a 6-point lead in Pennsylvania. Both?states?have improved their employment pictures in the past year. Ohio saw its jobless rate drop from 8.8 percent a year ago to 7.3 percent in May; Pennsylvania's rate fell from 8 percent to 7.3 percent in that time.

Obama?has turned to bus tours before when he needed to reconnect with voters. Last summer, after a bruising fight with congressional Republicans that brought the government to the brink of fiscal default, the president hit the road for a Midwestern bus tour aimed at refocusing his presidency on the economic issues affecting the middle class. He followed it up with a fall trip through Virginia and North Carolina.

Rolling through?swing?states?on a campaign bus allows?Obama?to engage in more of the informal, retail-style politics that can be hard to achieve in the highly scripted White House. Between his scheduled events, the president is sure to make surprise visits to restaurants and small businesses or stop to greet voters gathered on the side of the road to watch his motorcade.

Obama's?itinerary for the bus trip was still being finalized, but the official said the president probably would hold events in northern Ohio and western Pennsylvania. The official insisted on anonymity in order to discuss details of the trip before an official announcement from the campaign.

MOULTON, Ala. (WHNT) ? A Moulton man is charged with domestic violence for allegedly assaulting his 85-year-old mother.

James Steven Proctor, 53, is being held in the Lawrence County Jail.? He lives at 2290 County Road 170.

Proctor is charged with second-degree domestic violence, which is a Class C felony.

Lawrence County Sheriff Gene Mitchell said Proctor?s mother had to be flown to Huntsville Hospital last weekend.? Her injuries were severe, and she had some bleeding on the brain.

Investigators are working with the Lawrence County Department of Human Resources on the case.? They are not releasing many details on the circumstances of the case at this time.

Proctor was arrested on Wednesday.

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? Lindsay Lohan has resolved a case filed by three men she took on a high-speed ride that resulted in her second driving under the influence arrest in 2007.

Attorneys for the 25-year-old actress and the men confirmed Wednesday the lawsuit has been settled before trial. Terms were not disclosed.

Lohan's attorney Ed McPherson says a dismissal notice will be filed in court. He says Lohan can now devote her full attention to her career.

Attorney Randall Billington, who represents the men, says he is happy the case has been resolved and wishes Lohan the best.

Dante Nigro, Jakon Sutter and Ronnie Blake sued Lohan in 2008 claiming they were endangered when the actress commandeered a sport utility vehicle and chased a woman she believed was her personal assistant.

Scientists have discovered a new gene in the influenza virus that helps the virus control the body's response to infection.

Although this control is exerted by the virus, surprisingly it reduces the impact of the infection.

The findings will help researchers better understand how flu can cause severe infections, as well as inform research into new treatments.

Researchers found when the virus gene called PA-X was active, mice infected with flu subsequently recovered.

When the PA-X gene did not work properly, the immune system was found to overreact. This made the infection worse, and did not help destroy the virus any quicker.

The study looked at how the gene affected the behaviour of "Spanish flu", a virulent strain of influenza that caused a pandemic in 1918.

It was carried out by the Universities of Cambridge, Cork, Edinburgh and Utah, the Institute of Systems Biology in Seattle and the United States National Institutes of Health.

Scientists discovered the PA-X gene some 30 years after flu genome was first decoded.

Professor Paul Digard, of The Roslin Institute at the University of Edinburgh, said: "Just finding this gene in the first place is important, but the find is even more significant because of the role it seems to play in the body's response to flu."

The researchers, whose study is published online in the journal Science, found the hidden gene by analysing patterns of changes in the genetic information of thousands of different flu strains.

Dr Andrew Firth, of the University of Cambridge, said: "The flu virus has a very, very small genome - just 12 genes. Finding a new gene makes a pretty significant change to our understanding of this virus."

Estate planning is a task that people tend to put off, however, those who leave this world without their financial affairs in order risk leaving their heirs some significant problems. Here are some suggestions to consider this year.

??? Create a will. A solid will drafted with the guidance of an estate planning attorney costs more than a will-in-a-box, and may be the best money you ever spend. A valid will can save your heirs expensive headaches linked to probate and ambiguity.

??? Complement your will with related documents. Depending on your needs, these could include a trust (or trusts), durable financial and medical powers of attorney, a living will and other items.

??????????? A living will is not the same as a durable medical power of attorney. A living will makes your wishes known when it comes to life-prolonging medical treatments. A durable medical power of attorney authorizes another party to make medical decisions for you if you become unable to make these decisions.

??????????? Review your beneficiary designations. Who is the beneficiary of your IRA; your 401(k); your annuities or life insurance policies? If your answer is ?Mm ? you know ? I?m pretty sure it?s???check the documents.

??????????? Beneficiary designations take priority over bequests made in wills and living trusts. If you long ago named an ex-spouse as the beneficiary of your life insurance policy, he or she will receive the death benefit when you die ? regardless of what your will states. I recommend reviewing your beneficiaries every two years.??

??????????? Create asset and debt lists. Providing your heirs with an asset and debt ?map? they can follow makes them aware of the finer details of your wealth.

• One list details real estate you own and its worth, personal property items in your home, garage, or small business that have significant monetary value.
• Another list details your bank and brokerage accounts, retirement accounts, insurance policies, and other investments.
• A third list details your credit card debt, mortgage, and consumer loans.

? ? ? ? ? ? ?Consider gifting to reduce the size of your taxable estate. At present, the lifetime federal gift, estate and generation-skipping tax exemption is unified and set at $5,120,000 until January 1, 2013. In 2012 you have the ability to gift up to $4.12 million more than the old $1 million lifetime limit.

??????????? Consolidate IRAs and bank accounts. Consolidation means fewer statements, less paperwork and fewer administrative fees.

??????????? Select a reliable executor. Is there a real possibility that your named executor might die before you do? If you change your mind about the way you want your assets distributed, can you easily communicate those wishes to that person?

??????????? Your executor should have copies of your will, powers of attorney, healthcare proxy or living will, and trust documents. In fact, any of your loved ones referenced in these documents should also receive copies of them.

??????????? Talk to the professionals. Do-it-yourself estate planning is not recommended, especially if your estate is complex enough to trigger financial, legal and emotional issues among your heirs.

??????????? Keep in mind, money isn?t the only reason for an estate plan. You may not be a multimillionaire yet, but if you own a business, have a blended family, have kids with special needs, or can?t stand the thought of probate delays plus probate fees whittling away at assets you have amassed, these are all good reasons to create and maintain an estate plan.?

Slow sharks snack on sleeping seals

The Greenland sleeper shark has just been tagged the slowest fish in the sea relative to its size, according to a new study that also found the sharks have a sneaky way to still nab live prey ? they attack sleeping seals.

The results may explain how these sluggish sharks (Somniosus microcephalus), also called sleeper sharks for their slowness, manage a diet that includes seals. Reports have shown this slowpoke of the Arctic and North Atlantic consumes ringed seals (Pusa hispida), harbor seals (Phoca vitulina), hooded seals (Cystophora cristata) and bearded seals (Erignathus barbatus).

Scientists have known that cold water can slow down fish as it depresses their metabolisms. To find out if the cold waters put the brakes on the Greenland sharks and whether they still have the speed to catch seals, three researchers studied six of the sharks in the waters of Svalbard, Norway. They equipped the free-swimming sharks with data-logging tags to measure swim speed and tail-beat frequency, which indicates the speed of contraction of their locomotion muscles that can be slowed down in chilly waters. The average water temperature was 36 degrees Fahrenheit (2.3 degrees Celsius).

They compared the results with about 20 wild fish species weighing 0.4 to 8,600 pounds (0.2 to 3,900 kilograms); the Greenland sharks studied weighed 450 to 756 pounds (204 to 343 kg).

The Greenland sharks showed cruising speeds of about 0.76 miles per hour (0.34 meters per second) and a tail-beat frequency of 0.15 Hertz, both of which were lowest for their size across fish species examined.

The chilly waters may explain the slow tail-beating, the researchers suggest. Sharks and other animals can partially compensate for the slowing effect of cold waters by recruiting more muscle fibers to certain tasks or by having cold-adapted muscle fibers.

However, the fact that Greenland sharks were found to be so slow despite living in Arctic waters suggests the sharks don't seem to fully compensate for the depressing effects of the chill on muscle function.

But perhaps the sharks could rev up some speed when going after a seal meal, but the researchers found this wasn't the case; the sharks' maximum speeds (1.7 mph, or 0.74 m/s) and acceleration during burst swimming were much lower than those of seals.

It's likely the sharks are attacking sleeping seals. Unlike cetaceans, which keep half of their brains alert while the other half "sleeps," seals seem to wholly go to sleep, either at the surface or underwater.

"Arctic seals sleep in water to avoid predation by polar bears Ursus maritimus, which may leave them vulnerable to this cryptic slow-swimming predator," the researchers write in the Journal of Experimental Marine Biology and Ecology.

SOUTH BEND, Ind. ? Manufacturing companies are having trouble filling jobs even during this time of high unemployment.

Companies say they have to pay to train workers because not enough prospective employees are getting the skills they need from schools in Indiana. Aircraft parts and maintenance provider AAR Corp. in Indianapolis has started its own program to train sheet metal workers.

Indiana Manufacturers Association Vice President Brian Burton says it's a common problem. Businesses say the skills in shortest supply include tool and die workers, welders, robot technicians, mechanics and sheet metal workers.

Part of the problem is the changing face of the industry. The days of dirty factories with low-skilled workers have given way to companies that need employees with math skills and the ability to use technology and high-end electronics.

Husband and son search for missing Chinese woman

The husband and son of missing Chinese national Lianjie Guo made a plea on Thursday morning for the public's help in finding her.

A grid search was being conducted by investigators in the area where she was last seen, near Garden City Road and Capstan Way on June 7.

"Guo's disappearance is considered suspicious in nature and foul play has not been ruled out," RCMP Cpl. Sherrdean Turley said.

Guo, 47, went missing after coming to Canada on June 7 with her husband to visit their son.

She's described as five feet four inches tall, and was last seen wearing a red blouse, blue belt and blue jeans.

Police conducted an initial search at the onset of the investigation by Surrey Search and Rescue.

Anyone with information about Guo is asked to call the Richmond RCMP at 604-278-1212.
