Ooma Expands Free Home Phone Service into Canada

We?re pleased to announce today that we?re expanding into the Canadian market. Beginning today, Canadians can now choose to receive free crystal-clear calls to any phone number within Canada with the one-time purchase of the Ooma Telo. Premier subscribers in both countries can enjoy unlimited free calls between the U.S. and Canada.

Since Ooma began offering free home phone service in the U.S. with the Ooma Telo, our subscriber base has grown quickly, doubling in the last year alone. We?ve received frequent requests to bring Ooma to Canada because of the high cost of phone service there and we anticipate a healthy level of interest in eliminating expensive monthly phone bills.

Based on an average Canadian phone bill of $40/month, the Ooma Telo pays for itself in just six months and customers will save more than $200 in the first year, more than $600 in just two years and nearly $2,000 in five years.

Today, the Ooma Telo is now available at www.amazon.ca and London Drug in Canada at an M.S.R.P. of $229.99 CAD. The Ooma Telo includes a one-year limited warranty, a 30-day money back guarantee and a free 60-day trial of Ooma Premier service. Additionally, live customer service will be available by phone moving forward in both English and French.

Please see www.ooma.com/ca for more information about Ooma?s availability in Canada.

How Narconon Rehab Center Helps You Overcome Addiction ...

Narconon is a non-profit organization that is committed in preventing drug abuse from being widespread in the United States. In order to accomplish such purpose, this organization carries out a number of preventive, rehabilitative, and educational programs that are intended to prevent members of communities from approaching illegal drugs and other addictive substances and to help abusers withdraw from their addiction and avoid relapse. If you are suffering addiction or if you know someone who suffers addiction, consulting this organization is a good idea because you can get your addiction treated by enthusiastic professional therapists and counselors without having to spend too much money. If you are consulting this organization in order to undergo addiction recovery treatment, you will find several advantages that make Narconon program better than traditional drug rehab treatment. Unlike traditional program, which makes use of medications, especially methadone, to treat addiction, this drug rehab program doesn?t make use of any medication. There are two obvious reasons, among others, why medication usage is absent in this drug rehab program. Firstly, most medications that are used to treat addiction, including methadone, are addictive medications. You may be able to remove your addiction to certain narcotics by consuming such medication, but after you have got your narcotics addiction removed, you may become addicted to the medication that you use to treat your narcotics addiction. Secondly, addiction is caused by drug. Therefore, using another drug to treat addiction is not an effective way to encourage you to stay away from drug and other addictive substances. As the alternative, vitamins, foods, and supplements are given to you to alleviate your pain when you are withdrawing from your bad behavior. By consuming those vitamins, foods and supplements, the painful sensation of withdrawal symptoms will not become a problem that deters your effort to attain complete recovery. In addition to undergoing detoxification, which is intended to cleanse your body from polluting substance, you will also undergo mental, spiritual, and social trainings that are intended to improve your self-confidence and self-respect. After carrying out those trainings, you can become a sober individual that can avoid any seduction that urges you to relapse. Consulting Narconon rehab center is a smart way to get your addiction treated perfectly and to get yourself encouraged to stay away from drug and to avoid relapse. Therefore, consider consulting such rehab center if you want to get complete recovery from your addiction.

Friday Illusion: Control this animation with your mind

Sandrine Ceurstemont, editor, New Scientist TV

It's the closest any of us are likely to get to telekinesis. New animations created by Stuart Anstis from the University of California, San Diego, are showing how changing your gaze can alter the direction in which objects are moving.

If you watch this video normally, the moving circles in the first animation rotate while the shifting dots in the second clip follow a horizontal path. But if you look away and watch the movie out of the corner of your eye, the direction of motion will appear to change. In both cases, the moving objects seem to follow the direction of the background stripes.

The illusion proves that we perceive motion very differently when it's in the periphery compared with when it's picked up by the fovea, a tiny area at the back of the eye responsible for central vision. Looking at a scene directly results in the sharpest vision, whereas our peripheral vision is good at picking up motion but poor at making out the details of shapes. "That's why when you wave at someone in a crowded airport, your peripheral motion detectors pick up the motion and an eye movement steers the target onto the fovea for more detailed analysis," says Anstis.

The animation was a finalist in the 2012 Best Illusion of the Year Contest and was presented earlier this month at the event gala in Naples, Florida.

If you enjoyed this post, see how you can bend a shape with your mind?or check out our previous Friday Illusion videos.

Purchasing Houses For Returning Taxation Vs Committing in House ...

If you're established to get engaged with foreclosed investing, you're on the right monitor. House foreclosures are at an all-time high due to the latest downturn in the international economic system, and the chance of huge profits has never before been quite what it is in this present economical environment. The concern is, what street will you take - buying houses for back taxes, or by investing your money in mortgage foreclosures?

The obvious response is buying houses for back taxes, and here's why.

While getting mortgage foreclosed used to be a profitable business, present periods are displaying more and more property owners upside-down in their house mortgages. The value these people had in components decreased along with their ideals. Discovering your home foreclosed with any value still remaining in the bag is almost difficult presently.

Buying houses for back taxes, however, indicates usually never have your home and still have a ton of value remaining in them.

Why? Because at tax foreclosed revenue, home mortgages are removed - mortgage organizations make sure the transaction of past due taxes on a residence before it ever creates it to tax buy, making qualities that have no mortgage on them by time the buy comes around. Also, often periods the rear taxes due are the only economical debt on these houses; qualities without your home are most likely without any other liens.
So what do we do now? How do we get this property?

Most will likely have very little achievements at the tax deed/lien buy itself. A coordinator of huge tax residence economical commitment organizations will have long done their due persistence and investigated the top qualities to get. They would be willing to create a lesser roi than you are - in other terms, would likely be outbid. This shouldn't quit you from seeking to get tax property-- you basically have to be a little more innovative.

Why not try something along these collections. Find the property immediately from the proprietor - but delay until after the tax buy. This way, you avoid the need for aggressive market bidding process. And by time their residence has already been "sold" at tax buy, these property owners are more than willing to rid themselves of their tax responsibility and would rather see you with the residence instead of dropping it to the govt.

You will often observe that most these entrepreneurs have already approved the loss of components and basically want to put the bad reminiscences behind them. They are inspired to offer, and to offer for inexpensive. Not only do you help someone in need, but you also create a sensible economical commitment shift.

The present foreclosed amount won't last permanently - take benefits of it now.

Video: Romney pushes minority voter outreach

>>> could it be the next step of mitt romney 's presidential campaign ? twice this week he reached out to minority voters on wednesday. he spoke to hispanic business leaders. he made that stop in west philadelphia . the mayor of philly was not happy saying he did not know why romney was even there.

>> i don't know that was not-day experience in the heart of west philadelphia is enough to get you ready to run the united states of america .

>> politico reports, quote, it was one of romney 's first ventures on the campaign trail into inner city america. after months of campaigning in the mostly suburban and rural areas that were the focus of primary contests, philadelphia is heavily democratic turf. education is more central political ground for the presumptive republican nominee. joining me now, syndicated columnist. it was his first stop in the inner city . it is the headline, the push for african-american vote betters you the l.a. times believes this is more about moderate suburban people and not african-american voters.

>> well, i think it's both. actually, he has to pay attention to the african-american vote. only in the sense of saying or at least showing, i can be broader than just talking to suburb i can suburbia and the constituency. if i'm going to be the president of all the people then i have to talk to urban america, too. and of course, all roads lead back to african- americans and to an extent, latino voters. especially african-american voters. so i think it is part of the broadening our image of mitt romney . and then the second thing is, look where he chose and look what he chose. not only to speak but speak on. education. it was very smart in this sense. what he is thinking is school vouchers , chart he schools. that does touch a nerve among many african- americans . so why not essentially talk about issues that do in fact have some resonance with african- americans and talk about it in the venue where he is guaranteed to get maximum exposure . whether good, whether bad, it doesn't matter. at the end of the day he gets the exposure.

>> many have noted when he spoke before the latino business leaders which by the way, the registered voters in this new " wall street journal " poll. 61%. obama, 27%. romney . he did not talk about immigration. he did not talk about the dream act or even those infamous remarks he made regarding self-deportation that would criticize for members of his own party. that he also chose to talk about education there as well.

>> well, that's important. two things, number one, education. here we go again. chart he school, vouchers. remember, these are things very sensitive among african- americans and latinos simply because they think, and correctly so in many areas, that public school are failing their children. so it touches a nerve. the second thing, too, remember, business. that's very important. especially among hispanics and african americans , too. remember, that strikes to the heart of something else. romney 's mantra is jobs and the economy. why not talk about business and education and on top of that, african- americans and latinos. that's an audience. so it is a perk fit.

>> let me play a clip of an exchange that governor romney had with a teacher in philadelphia regarding class size.

>> i can't think of any teacher. mr. bennett would you want more kids in your classroom?

>> no.

>> it's large enough. it is too large.

>> how many students do you have?

>> it varies between classes. but anywhere from 23 to 28?

>> that's just a snippet there. but the heart of conversation was that mitt romney 's citing stats that show class size don't matter. he was countered by another teacher who said there's other research that says class size in fact does. there he is in this roundtable in a setting that we've not, and obviously factually not seen him in at least cynic he has been running for president this time.

>> and the other thing, too, even beyond that. he was challenged, too. so he picked a very comfortable venue. he picked a very comfortable, what he thought was an audience. and he picked a very comfortable sub, too. which essentially once nerve among many african- americans . he was about class size and other thing, too, he was challenged on. at the same time, tamron, there was still skepticism, deep skepticism among the audience that essentially was a very, you would think, romney friendly audience if there would ever be a romney friendly audience among african- americans .

>> thank you for your time. i greatly appreciate it. right

Car Loan 101: Buy Here Pay Here Car Financing

Buying a vehicle may be stressful, especially if you have bad credit. You'll find it problematical to obtain financing with your adverse credit ranking. Thankfully, certain car dealers and loaners offer another type of car financing - Buy Here Pay Here (BHPH). This type of financial loan is different from conventional loans in many aspects. It's wise to comprehend how BHPH functions to stay clear of unexpected downsides.

What is Buy Here Pay Here?

Buy Here Pay Here is financing made at a car dealership. This means you do not need to apply for third-party loan providers like banks and private brokers, as you will make direct repayments with the dealer. This car finance option allows you to qualify for financing although you may have a bad credit score. As such, many people who go to BHPH dealerships are those with a bad credit score or have expressed personal bankruptcy in the past.

Although this is mostly the case, BHPH permits people in bad financial situations to boost their credit score.

How exactly does Buy Here Pay Here Work?

In regular car financing, you and the dealer will discuss the payment after you've picked a vehicle. BHPH operates otherwise. You should tell the dealership concerning your financial predicament before you can decide on a vehicle. The BHPH dealer will ask questions regarding your financial allowance, evaluate your finances, and give cars that could fit your budget.

Another difference between regular loans and BHPH car finance is definitely the method of payment. The former requires repayment to third-party loan providers. In BHPH, you'll need to make weekly or bi-weekly repayments to the dealer.? Nearly all dealers take cash for payment, although some allow online financial transactions and money orders. You must discuss with the dealer for the payment method appropriate for your finances.

BHPH car financing also charges higher interest when compared with regular loans. Therefore, you will be obliged to pay on time.? Although this can be a heavy financial obligation, it can help you rebuild your credit ranking. Many dealers provide a late-payment policy, giving a grace period when you have delays in your payments. Some, nevertheless, might repossess the vehicle if you can't pay punctually consecutively.

What are the important things about Buy Here Pay Here?

Choosing Buy Here Pay Here car financing has several positive aspects. The most crucial is the availability of cars even with a decent spending budget and a bad credit. The dealership can look for a vehicle with great value that could suit your needs and financial situation. What is even better is the trade-in flexibility-BHPH dealers may take in your old car and look for a buyer for it. BHPH also gives you the opportunity to re-establish your credit track record, as some dealers report to credit bureaus.

How do you apply for Buy Here Pay Here car finance?

The first thing you should consider is your credit score. Assess if you have the means and capabilities to finance your car purchase. Afterwards, find the nearest BHPH dealer in your area-this will make it easier to make timely payments. Bring all the documents for your financing: driver's license, auto insurance, bank and credit information, proof of employment and income, and references. You should also prepare your down payment when you go to BHPH dealers.? ?

Army spy blimp to launch within weeks: 300 feet long, $500 million, 'multi-intelligent'

Image

It can't go faster than 34MPH and it's already a year late for its planned deployment in Afghanistan, but Northrop Grumman's Long Endurance Multi-Intelligence Vehicle (LEMV) is now set for its maiden flight. The test run is scheduled for sometime between June 6th and 10th over Lakehurst, New Jersey, whose residents ought to be forewarned that it is not a solar eclipse or a Death Star, but simply a helium-filled pilotless reconnaissance and communications airship that happens to be the size of a football field. After floating around for a while, the giant dirigible is expected to journey south to Florida, where it'll be fitted to a custom-built gondola that will carry the bulk of its equipment, and by which time her enemies hopefully won't have come into possession of an air force.

Hazelnuts: New source of key fat for infant formula that's more like mother's milk

Hazelnuts: New source of key fat for infant formula that's more like mother's milk [ Back to EurekAlert! ] Public release date: 23-May-2012

Scientists are reporting development of a healthy "designer fat" that, when added to infant formula, provides a key nutrient that premature babies need in high quantities, but isn't available in large enough amounts in their mothers' milk. The new nutrient, based on hazelnut oil, also could boost nutrition for babies who are bottle-fed for other reasons. The report appears in ACS' Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry.

Casimir Akoh and colleagues explain that human milk is the "gold standard" for designing infant formulas. Mothers naturally provide the healthful omega-3 fatty acid DHA (docosahexaenoic acid) and omega-6 fatty acid ARA (arachidonic acid) important for brain development and the development of other organs to infants during the last three months of pregnancy. These fatty acids (components of fats) are also in human milk. But premature infants don't get full exposure to DHA and ARA in the uterus because they are born too soon. And their mothers' milk doesn't yet contain high enough levels when the infants are born. Some mothers, of course, do not nurse. That's why infant formulas include proteins, sugars and fats to bring them closer to the standard of human milk.

Currently, DHA and ARA (in the form of triacylglycerols) from algae are added to many formulas, but concerns exist about the digestibility of these algae-derived fatty acids, which are not exactly identical to those in human milk. So, Akoh's team set out to build a new designer fat from hazelnut oil that more closely mimics the DHA and ARA in human milk. The report describes development of fats from hazelnut oil that contain DHA and ARA at the same positions found on fats in human milk. The scientists extensively analyzed these human milk fat mimics and conclude that the new DHA and ARA source is suitable for the supplementation of infant formulas.

Post Office struggles may mean more junk mail

By Herb Weisbaum, The ConsumerMan

The U.S. Postal Service needs to boost revenue and it sees your mailbox as a potential moneymaker.

It?s created a service, Every Door Direct Mail, to encourage small businesses to send advertisements through the mail.?

You?ve probably seen more junk mail in the last year because of Every Door Direct. And you can expect to see even more in the future.?

The Every Door Direct program is simple and cost effective. For just 14.5 cents per mailing, a business can send fliers, coupons, menus or other advertising materials to people in a targeted area.?

This is unaddressed mail; it does not require a person?s name or street address. The mailing goes to everyone on the carrier?s route. Another benefit: A business can buy as little as a single route (between 500 and 550 deliveries) for about $75.?

?These are offers that people want because they are from the stores where they shop,? says David Mastervitch, manager of saturation mail and catalogs at USPS.? ?They don?t consider this junk. They consider this relevant mail because it gives them offers for the local businesses they deal with.??

The Postal Service says the small business community has embraced the service. In its first year, the Every Door Direct program generated more than $180 million for USPS.?

?I think the product is going to help small business grow and help the Postal Service in the future,? Mastervitch says.?

That?s what worries Chuck Teller, executive director of Catalog Choice, a non-profit group that helps people stop unwanted catalogs and other advertising mail.?

?More than 1.7 billion pieces of unaddressed mail are sent every year and the USPS plans to increase this by five times, generating billions more pieces of unwanted mail annually,? Teller says. ?It is imperative that the USPS respect consumer?s right to control the amount and type of advertising mail they receive.??

Teller insists he is not against direct advertising mail. He just wants people to have the ability to say no to unsolicited ads going into their mailbox.?

I don?t want this!?
What if you don?t want unaddressed advertising mail from a particular business in your area??

The Postal Service says you should contact the business sending the mailing. Ask to be placed on its ?do not mail? list. The company is supposed to pass this information along to the post office, so the carrier will not deliver to your address.?

Catalog Choice says this is not always happening. People have complained that if they ask to have a mailing stopped, some companies say that cannot be done with this type of mail. That?s clearly wrong.?

People are being told they can?t stop this type of mail ? which is clearly wrong. Some respond by telling the person to contact their post office. Again, that?s wrong. The Postal Service does not maintain any sort of ?do not mail? list. That is done by individual companies.?

But if a company tells the post office you don?t want its advertising mail, there is a process in place to make sure the carrier doesn?t deliver it to you.?

?There is massive confusion between the post office and companies about whether an individual has the right to opt-out of unaddressed mail,? Teller says.?

About a month ago, Catalog Choice started a campaign, which included an online petition to the Postmaster General encouraging him to ?respect consumers? right to control the amount and type of advertising material they receive.? So far, more than 40,000 people have signed the Citizens for Mail Choice petition.?

It asks U.S. Postal Service to train its staff about opt-out policies and procedures, provide clear information to businesses about how to honor opt-outs with Every Door Direct Mail and penalize companies that fail to honor opt-outs from these mailings.?

Teller believes a successful opt-out program for Every Door Direct mail will be good for the post office because the mail people get will be more relevant. The Postal Service says it agrees.?

?This is a new product,? David Mastervitch at U.S.P.S. tells me. ?As we go out and do our training with businesses, we will absolutely talk about the fact that every business should honor consumer choice. And if the choice of the consumer is to not get that mailing piece, then you have to have a method to tell us.??

My two cents?
I hate junk mail as much as the next person. But I also know that the Postal Service needs money and small businesses need a way to grow. Do you really want to pay more to mail a letter or have your local post office closed??

The mail is there for all of us. The beauty of this new mail service is that it?s simple. It goes to every door. And quite frankly, an unwanted ad in the mailbox is not the same as a telemarketing call during dinner. With the mailing, you just toss it into the recycle bin.?

Still, smart businesspeople know that if someone doesn?t want to be contacted, they should honor those wishes. Hopefully, that word will get out and everyone can benefit from this service.?

Microsoft launches So.cl, a new social network for people who don?t know any better

So.cl is an exciting experiment in not having privacy, ever

Between?Facebook,?Google+,?Myspace,?LinkedIn,?Pinterest,?Twitter, and even?Lady Gaga's new social network, there are more social networks than you likely know what do to with. But if you really insist on having yet another in the mix, then Microsoft's got just the thing:?So.cl, a new "experiment in social search."

The site will let the things you search for be "viewable by other So.cl users," and, just as exciting, "also be available to third parties."? If you do decide to make a jump to So.cl, just make sure you?remember you joined So.cl so you don't go around sharing your embarrassing searches for "weird rash on my foot" and "Spice Girl pics" with the world at large. The new social network also allows you to "discover new interests" and "start a video party," so you can talk with other folks with weird rashes on their feet, and discover new places rashes might appear.

It appears that So.cl isn't available to the general public yet ? we got a message thanking us for "joining the So.cl waiting list" when we tried to join. But don't worry, if you want complete strangers knowing about all your searches, you just can?keep using Google.

Imperfect chip pretty darn good

High error rates no obstacle in some applications

Web edition : 3:59 pm

To err is not only human ? it?s silicon. Computer chips that are designed to make mistakes are faster, smaller and more energy efficient than their perfect counterparts. Scientists interviewed dozens of humans about acceptable levels of error in video visuals and then used a mathematical algorithm to fine-tune a chip to take shortcuts and make tolerable processing mistakes. Regular processing yields a sharp image (left), but a relative error of 0.54 percent is still pretty good (center), the team reported May 15 at the ACM Computing Frontiers conference in Cagliari, Italy. The chip with a 7.58 percent error rate (right) is about 15 times more efficient than an ordinary chip in speed, space and energy use. Led by Krishna Palem of Rice University in Houston, the researchers have built 10 chip prototypes and the hardware will go into thousands of low-cost I-slate tablets for use in classrooms in India. The researchers are now investigating tolerable error rates for chips in hearing aids.

Surgical removal of abdominal fat reduces skin cancer in mice

ScienceDaily (May 21, 2012) ? Is it possible that liposuction or other fat removal procedures are beneficial for treating obesity and reducing the risk of cancer?

When it comes to humans, scientists can't answer that question. They know that obesity increases the risk of heart disease, diabetes and cancer. But there have not been clinical studies to determine if the surgical removal of fat tissue would decrease cancer risk in humans.

In animal studies, however, Rutgers scientists, who have published new research online in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, have found that surgical removal of abdominal fat from mice fed a high-fat diet reduces the risk of ultraviolet-light induced skin cancer -- the most prevalent cancer in the United States with more than 2 million new cases each year.

"We don't know what effect fat removal would have in humans," said Allan Conney, professor of pharmacology and director of the Susan Lehman Cullman Laboratory for Cancer Research at the Ernest Mario School of Pharmacy. "We would like to encourage epidemiologists to study whether there is a lower incidence of sunlight-induced skin cancer in people who have had liposuction surgery to remove fat tissue."

For more than a decade, Conney and his colleague Yao-Ping Lu have been studying how caffeine and exercise, which also decrease tissue fat, work to block UV-induced skin cancer. Despite the multiple human epidemiological studies that link coffee intake to a decrease in nonmelanoma skin cancer risk, just how and why coffee protects against the disease is still unknown.

In this new skin cancer study, Rutgers researchers found that surgical removal of abdominal fat from obese mice fed a high-fat diet had between 75-80 percent fewer UV-induced skin cancers than mice that did not undergo fat-removal surgery.

Although scientists understand that tissue fat may play a role in tumor formation, there has been little research on the molecular mechanisms of how a high-fat diet increases the formation of skin cancer. This new study suggests that abdominal fat in mice secretes proteins that enhance the risk of cancer. Once the original fat tissue is removed, the biochemical properties of new fat tissue that appear after surgery are less harmful.

While it is well known that decreased calorie-intake, low-fat diets and physical exercise are recommended for treating obesity, preventing cancer by surgically removing tissue fat still needs to be explored.

"It would be interesting to see if surgical removal of fat tissue in animals would prevent obesity-associated lethal cancers like those of the pancreas, colon and prostate," Conney said. "Whether removal of tissue fat in humans which has certain risks would decrease the risk of life-threatening cancers in humans is not known."

Megrahi, who said he was not responsible for bringing the jumbo jet down on the Scottish town and killing 270 people, was found guilty in 2001 but was freed in 2009 and returned to Libya because he had terminal cancer and was not expected to live long.

Megrahi's brother Mohammed told Reuters he had died at his home in the Libyan capital from complications from prostate cancer and the funeral would take place on Monday.

"He was too sick to utter anything on his deathbed," another brother, Abdulhakim, said. "Just because Abdul Basset is dead doesn't mean the past is now erased," he said. "We will always tell the world that my brother was innocent."

The decision by officials in Scotland to return Megrahi to Libya angered relatives of many victims, 189 of whom were American, and was criticized by Washington as Megrahi returned to a hero's welcome from Muammar Gaddafi.

That he survived for nearly three more years, outliving Gaddafi, who was overthrown last year, caused discomfort in Britain. Prime Minister David Cameron, visiting the United States on Sunday, said Megrahi should never have been freed.

Scottish leader Alex Salmond said his death confirmed his medical condition had been serious. "Mr Megrahi's death ends one chapter of the Lockerbie case, but it does not close the book," he said, noting Scottish lawyers were seeking other suspects.

Megrahi, the only person convicted for the bombing, was found guilty under Scots law of secretly loading a suitcase bomb onto a plane at Malta's Luqa Airport, where he was head of operations for Libyan Arab Airlines in December 1988.

The suitcase was transferred at Frankfurt to another flight and then onto New York-bound PanAm Flight 103 at London's Heathrow airport, concluded Scottish judges sitting at a converted Dutch military base selected as a neutral trial venue.

All 259 people aboard the aircraft were killed when it exploded and 11 people in the small town of Lockerbie died when homes and vehicles were obliterated by falling debris.

Megrahi, handed over by Gaddafi under a U.N.-brokered deal, always insisted he was merely an airline executive, not a Libyan intelligence agent as prosecutors charged.

His trial was part of a process of rapprochement by which Gaddafi distanced himself from association with groups regarded as terrorists in the West and secured renewed cooperation with Western firms keen to exploit Libya's oil and gas reserves.

CONTROVERSIES

Reaction to Megrahi's death reflected the controversies that have raged for years over his role.

Many people in Britain say they believe he was a scapegoat, while many in the United States have accused Britain of releasing him to help secure oil deals in Gaddafi's Libya. Britain has denied the charge.

U.S. Senator Charles Schumer of New York, who wanted the Libyan government that took over after Gaddafi's ouster and killing by rebels to take Megrahi into custody, said his return to Libya was a major injustice.

"The whole deal smelled of a deal for oil for this man's freedom and that was almost blasphemy given what a horrible person he was and the terrible destruction and tragedy that he caused," Schumer told CNN.

"I don't know if we'll ever get to the bottom of it now."

British Prime Minister David Cameron, who was in opposition when Megrahi was freed, said in Chicago: "I've always been clear he should never have been released from prison.

"Today is a day to remember the 270 people who lost their lives in what was an appalling terrorist act. Our thoughts should be with them and their families for the suffering they've had."

Jim Swire, the father of one of the British Lockerbie victims, said he was convinced Megrahi was innocent.

"I've been satisfied for some years that this man had nothing to do with the murder of my daughter and I grit my teeth every time I hear newscasters say 'Lockerbie bomber has died'" he told BBC News television. "This is a sad day."

Megrahi told Reuters in October the West had exaggerated his role and the truth about what happened would emerge soon.

Babette Solon Hollister, 79, whose 20 year old daughter died on the PanAm flight said: "I don't know if he was totally guilty but we know he was involved ... I doubt anything will be resolved now."

Libya's National Transitional Council (NTC), which ousted Gaddafi last year, has said it would work with the Scottish government over the possible involvement of others in the 1988 bombing, an attack the country's new rulers are eager to distance themselves from.

"We would have liked to uncover more truths, but his death will not shut the Lockerbie file," NTC spokesman Mohamed al-Harizy said on Sunday.

Gaddafi's Libya emerged from isolation after it scrapped a banned weapons program and paid compensation for the Lockerbie bombing.

Megrahi was handed over by Libya with fellow suspect Al-Amin Khalifa Fahima under a U.N.-brokered deal. Fahima was acquitted by the Scottish judges at Camp Zeist in January 2001.

Megrahi was jailed in the town of Greenock, near Glasgow.

On Sunday, his neighbors in the Libyan capital rolled out a carpet and set up chairs in the courtyard outside his house in preparation for condolence visits by family and friends.

"My brother was surrounded by his wife, children and his mother as he took his last breath," his brother Abdulhakim said.
